Summary

A sculptural chair inspired by the phoenix—resting wings, arched back, and a body that reads as renewal. The form is composed of four aluminum components that fuse into a seamless shell; parametric, feather-like patterns along the arms catch light while the structure stays functional. The intent is a throne-like seat that pairs mythology with engineering.

Process

Approach
1. Developed parametric feather patterns; 3D model led the arched back and flowing armrests, tuning angles for support.
2. Machined four aluminum components; pressed curves and milled surface details.
3. Fused parts with high-temperature scorching; then hand-finished—sanded and polished—to maximize reflectivity.
4. Produced a 1:10 aluminum model to validate proportions and assembly logic before full scale.

Challenges
Early fusion warped panels—refined heat/cool cycles and clamping to keep geometry true.

Insights
Treat thermal fusion as its own design phase: define fixtures and cooling windows up front; parametric surfaces look best when CNC defines the geometry and hand finishing controls the light.
