Summary

A two-piece study in Taiwan’s rush-grass craft, created with Tunghai University. Pendant turns woven rush into a glowing conical light; Tension pairs hand-woven mats with a light bamboo frame to create a balanced seat. The goal was to revive traditional weaving in modern objects, combining natural fiber with simple structures and electronics while keeping the work honest and functional.

Process

Approach
1. Sourced and prepared wild rush grass; dried, sorted, and tested traditional weaves for strength and flexibility.
- For Tension: hand-cut bamboo legs, tied T-junctions, stretched woven mats over the frame to add pre-tension.
- For Pendant: 3D-printed ABS cone, wrapped with rush grass; integrated LED and diffuser; tuned pattern for even glow.
2. Iterated patterns (e.g., papaya weave) and joint details until both pieces balanced stiffness, weight, and feel.

Challenges
Frame wobble on Tension and LED flicker on Pendant—reinforced joints with bamboo thread and isolated wiring; improved pre-tension and cable routing.

Insights
Natural fiber + rigid frame demands planned pre-tension; electronics need early isolation from organic materials. Test structural blends sooner to reduce rework.
